His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan founded CERT in 1996 as the commercial arm of the Higher Colleges of Technology. 

It was the vision of our Chancellor that The Center of Excellence for Applied Research and Training would contribute to the growth and development of applied research in the United Arab Emirates, and also make available to the public and private sector the intellectual and educational resources of the Higher Colleges as well as the best programs of our education collaborators from around the world.

Under the leadership of its Founding Director, Dr. Tayeb Kamali, CERT has grown to be, by some estimations, the largest private education provider in the Middle East. 

Working with the family of Higher Colleges, CERT provides training in languages, health and environment, work readiness, entrepreneurship, management, engineering, financial services and a range of corporate training customized for the needs of industry.  CERT’s clients include the largest public and private sector organizations in the region including the UAE Military, and the Presidential Court   

CERT is developing technology and applied research in collaboration with technology leaders such as Intel, Microsoft and IBM. CERT has become the first organization in the South Asia, Middle East, North Africa region to offer supercomputing power through its acquisition of the IBM Blue Gene; the fastest and most muscular computing platform in the world.
